This\u00a0exhibition honors\u00a0the past, present and future of one of NYC\u2019s vital resources,\u00a0our community gardens.\u00a0The modern age of urban community gardening began\u00a0in the 1970\u2019s and 80\u2019s. These\u00a0gardens\u00a0grew\u00a0out of burnt\u00a0out\u00a0and\u00a0abandoned lots\u00a0after years of neglect, quite often due to\u00a0the\u00a0purposeful\u00a0destruction of properties by\u00a0unethical landlords.\u00a0In\u00a0marginalized areas of the city,\u00a0people banded together to reclaim\u00a0unused\u00a0land for the betterment of their communities. They created\u00a0beautiful and\u00a0safe spaces for children to play\u00a0and learn about nature,\u00a0and for neighbors\u00a0to plant,\u00a0grow\u00a0a garden, and gather together. Every year there are hundreds of events,\u00a0educational workshops,\u00a0and food distribution initiatives\u00a0in the many gardens that dot our urban landscape.

Community gardens by nature are activist spaces and the fight continues to protect\u00a0and preserve\u00a0these spaces that are constantly under threat by\u00a0urban\u00a0development.\u00a0This show is an artisticexploration and\u00a0expression to\u00a0celebrate\u00a0what is possible\u00a0through solidarity, commitment and love.\u00a0
