statement
I paint because when I see something that strikes me as beautiful, serene or unique, something that might be commonplace but has a magical quality, I want to capture that fleeting moment on canvas permanently.

I grew up on the banks of the Hudson River, in a small town outside New York City, and I began painting and drawing there. My home was filled with art, including some works by my Belgian ancestors, the deBraekeleers and Henri Leys.

I studied art in school in this country, independently in Paris and Amsterdam, and at the Art Students' League in NYC. In 1980 I began painting out of doors in my neighborhood, the East Village. Here I feel the history of the city and the continuity of life; the old buildings seem to live and breathe. Because of the low height of the buildings, one can see a lot of sky. The pocket gardens in abandoned lots give glimpses of shimmering flowers and quirky, incongruous shacks. My neighborhood enables me to capture the loveliness and drama of nature, even in the city.

My paintings on this site are done in oil on linen canvas. My paintings are generally available for sale; the prices range from $500 to $4000. Please feel free to contact me, I would love to hear from viewers of this site.
